Utrecht University’s University Hall is a historic venue. Weather permitting, we will enjoy the beautiful walled garden, located between the Dom church and University Hall. In the extremely unlikely event of poor weather, the reception will take place indoors, in the ancient aula of the building.
The aula is a historic place. Initially it was the Chapter house of the Dom Church, built in 1462, and it is where the first lecture of Utrecht University was delivered in 1636. Today the old Chapter house is the aula of the University Hall, built in 1891 as a (late) gift in commemoration of the 250th anniversary of Utrecht University. The style of the University Hall is best described as Neo-Renaissance. The aula is also noteworthy as the place where the Union of Utrecht was signed in 1579, an event considered to be the first step in the founding of the Dutch Republic in 1588. The statue in front of the University Hall honors the founder of the Union of Utrecht: Jan van Nassau, younger brother of William of Orange-Nassau who is the ancestor of the monarchy of the Netherlands. Nowadays, the University Hall is mainly employed for university ceremonies such as PhD defenses and professors’ inaugural speeches.
